Rémy Cabella was born on 8 March 1990 in Ajaccio, Corsica, to an Italian father and a Corsican mother. He began his youth career at local clubs AC Ajaccio and Gazélec Ajaccio before joining Montpellier's academy at 14, where he helped the under-19 team lift the 2009 Coupe Gambardella. On 13 July 2014, Cabella signed for Premier League side Newcastle United on a six-year contract for a reported £8 million fee. He made his competitive debut on 17 August, playing the full 90 minutes in a 2–0 home loss to Manchester City. His only Newcastle goal came on 31 January 2015, a composed opener in a 3–0 away win at Hull City, which earned him the club's Player of the Month award from fans. In total, he made 34 appearances for Newcastle, scoring just once. On 19 August 2015, he returned to France on a season-long loan to Marseille as part of a swap deal that sent Florian Thauvin to Newcastle.
