The making of Once Twice Melody stretched across nearly four years, beginning in 2018 at the duo's own Apple Orchard Studio in Baltimore and continuing through sessions at Pachyderm Studio, United Studio, and Village Recorders until mid-2021. A defining aspect of this cycle was the duo's decision to produce the record entirely on their own — a first in their catalog. Guitarist Alex Scally took the unusual step of teaching himself audio engineering so he could capture lead vocalist Victoria Legrand's vocal performances, a process that consumed roughly five months and concluded in late 2021.
